Fairplex Park History

Fairplex Park is governed by the Los Angeles County Fair Association. The Los Angeles County Fair was inaugurated on October 17, 1922. For the construction of permanent building and a grandstand, $75,000 bond was approved. An extra 62 acres of land were purchased later on. In 1924, Afflerbaugh was named as the FairÂ’s first paid manager and he served until 1960. In 1926, the administrator building was designed by Peter Ficker, who was a resident of Pomona.

The fairgrounds, owned by the City of Pomona, and the buildings, owned by the Fair Association, were deeded to the County of Los Angeles in the year 1932. California Governor James Rolph Jr helped financially to construct the grandstand on September 17. Fairplex offices, located in the community building on South Garey Avenue, were relocated to the Progress Bulletin building on Third Street in Pomona and the racetrack was expanded from one-half mile to five-eighths of a mile. A single-day record turnout of 177,612 people took place at the Fair on September 21, 1985.

The grandstand and clubhouse of the racetrack were renovated and the track was renamed Fairplex Park. Lighting was added at the track as night harness racing made its seasonal debut in Pomona in 1986. After two years, harness racing was discontinued. The Fairplex Park celebrated its 75th anniversary with a 75-cent opening day admission price, attracting more than 90,000 people.

Fairplex established three non-profit organizations: The Fairplex Child Development Center, The Millard Sheets Gallery and the Fairplex Education Foundation. The goal is to raise funds through grants and charitable donations. Red Gate and Yellow Gate were reconfigured for one new entrance at Yellow Gate and a new signage was introduced. The Republican presidential candidate, George W. Bush, unleashed the opening day ribbon in 2000. Fireplex and the city of Pomona jointly started beautifying the ground in 2004.
